One of my first stops when I moved to Los Angeles was to scope out the Arts District near downtown. My boyfriend and I checked out a few breweries one Saturday, including Angel City Brewery and Arts District Brewing Company. Note: I preferred the beer and atmosphere at Arts District Brewing, it was lively with a lot of games and some good beers whereas the beer at Angel City was very average.
We then grabbed a bite to eat at Wurstkuche. It was a sausage and beer lover's dream come true. In modern, German beer hall style, there were a variety of sausages and beers to choose from. I got the bockwurst (veal, pork & spices) with caramelized onions and sauerkraut. He got the bratwurst (fine cuts of heritage pork, coriander & nutmeg) with caramelized onions and sweet peppers. We shared some Belgian fries.
The sausages were delicious, and the mustards that were available were a welcome addition, including: Whole Grain, Dijon, Spicy Brown, Honey Mustard, American Yellow. They were all great, but I especially loved the whole grain mustard. The fries were real standouts. I tend to be picky about fries and these did not disappoint (Note: In-N-Out's fries are terrible, and they are not worth your attention; I will debate this with anyone). But these fries, holy cow. They were incredibly crispy and flavorful, and we ate every last one of them.
Wurstkuche is a great spot if you have a large group and are looking for something tasty and casual. Or if you just like a good sausage. Plus they have a great German beer list to boot. Like a boot of beer, catch that?
Locations are in both Venice and Downtown LA. Prost!
